The 2014 Northwest Cup and Shield tournaments took place over the weekend of the 30th and 31st August. All the competitions were keenly contested and a really high stars of football was on display throughout the weekend. Here are the results from the weekend, well done to all the teams who entered.
Ballinasaloe take 2014 North West Shield U14
Ballinasloe Town won the 2014 North West Shield on saturday last at strandhill community park. Ballinalsoe have been regular participants including in the first ever tournament in 2009. Well done to the galway boys on taking home some silverware.
Bonagee United from Donegal win 2014 North West Cup
Letterkenny based Bonagee United won the North West Cup U14 with an impressive 3-0 defeat of Stonepark (Longford) in saturdays final. Stonepark had been unbeaten right through the tournament but Bonagee fast passing game saw them take the final. This was the donegal teams second year in the tournament and just reward having come close last year.
Home side take U16 2014 North West Shield
Home side Strand Celtic won the 2014 U16 North West Shield with a one nil victory over Sligo side Arrow Harps. Strand only conceded one goal in the tournament but unfortunately for the home side this was against finalists Ballymote and goals scored sent them into the shield competition. Overall the home side, featuring two Republic of Ireland U15 internationals, played well and improved as the tournament progressed.
Ballisodare United finally take U16 North West Cup
Ballisodare United have been in every competition since the north west cup commenced in 2009. Despite coming close on several occasions they never grabbed the cup. Their continued support finally bore fruits this year. This year was different and with player of the tournament, John Mahon, in fine form the Ballisodare Boys defeated a gallant Ballymote Celtic side a 2-1 victory in the final.
